  Thoughts on a New Year

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
                                  Edith Lovejoy Pierce

It's New Year's Day, a day when we all seem to struggle just a bit to figure out how we can change our lives for the better. We make resolutions that we will improve in some aspects of our lives. The most common resolution is about weight. We promise ourselves that we will be better - lose weight, exercise, eat healthier foods, etc. The problem with the entire process is that most people abandon their resolutions by February.

I always felt that New Year's resolutions were forced. You were expected to make them, and perhaps that is why most people fail to follow through. You aren't making changes from your heart, or because you have a motivation caused by something in your life. You are making the resolution only because it is January 1st. Therefore the reason why is not compelling enough.

Perhaps this year, instead of making meaningless resolutions, just take out some time to examine your life, and give the way you live your life some thought. If nothing changes, at least you won't be worse off than you probably have been most years, if you follow the statistical pattern!

Happy New Year's, everyone!! I sincerely hope that it is a year of health and happiness for all of us.

God's Plan: A Christmas Story

My Mom died two years ago at the age of 95.  She lived with us the last nine years of her life, and all of us miss her terribly. So when I heard about the Presents for Patients Program here in Pittsburgh, I thought this would be a wonderful way to bring a little bit of my Mom's presence back into our Christmas.

Find out how this didn't work out quite the way I expected by clicking here.

When Can I Eat Normally Again?

It's a very common question, "After weight loss surgery, when can I start to eat normally again?" Those of us who have had weight loss surgery a few years ago know the answer - never! But of course it depends on what the definition of "normal eating" is.

Recipe: Cheery Cherry Brunch Pie

I often get requests from people, especially those in my Back on Track with Barbara Internet Mentoring Program, for different breakfast ideas. It is a challenge to find something unusual. The monotony of eggs can make breakfast really boring.

Here is a great breakfast idea from the book 90 Ways to Ditch Your Diet  by chef and bariatric patient David Fouts.

Cheery Cherry Brunch Pie

1/2 pound turkey sausage
1 16 oz can unsweetened tart cherries, drained and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup low fat cheddar cheese, shredded
1 cup reduced fat baking mix
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
4 large eggs
1-1/2 cup 1% milk

Preheat oven to 400° F.

In a large skillet, cook sausage until brown, breaking into small pieces as it cooks; drain off fat.

Remove from heat.

Add cherries, mix well.

Spoon sausage and cherry mixture into a 10-inch deep-dish pie plate; top with chese.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine baking mix, basil and pepper.

Add eggs and milk; beat until smooth. Pour over cheese.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Let cool 5 minutes.

Makes 6 servings.
